This World Is Not My Home
Introduction: Scripture Reading- I Peter 2:9-12
"This world is not my home, I’m just a-passing through..."
This hymn reminds us that our true citizenship is in heaven. We are not meant to settle here, but to journey through with purpose and hope.
I. We Are Strangers and Pilgrims
Hebrews 11:13-16; 8-10
- Strangers – xenos (G3581): foreigner, alien.
- Pilgrims – parepidēmos (G3927): one who resides temporarily; a traveler.
1 Peter 2:1-12
- We are called to live holy lives, resisting worldly desires.
- Lusts – epithumia (G1939): strong desire, often for what is forbidden.
II. The World Is Passing Away
1 John 2:15–17
- World – kosmos (G2889): the ordered system, often in opposition to God.
- The world is temporary, but those who do God’s will are eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:7-18
- Our earthly, physical, bodies are temporary, but our spirit is eternal. How we live our pilgrimage out in this foreign country will determine where we spend our eternity.
III. Our Treasure Is in Heaven
Matthew 6:19–24
- Jesus teaches us to invest in eternal things, not temporary wealth or status.
- Treasure – thēsauros (Strong’s G2344): a storehouse, a deposit of wealth.
- What we value most reveals the location of our heart and thus our soul in eternity.
Colossians 3:1–4
Conclusion: Living with Heaven in View
As we journey through this life, we must remember:
This world is not our home. We are strangers and pilgrims, walking by faith, not by sight. This means we are trusting that that home in heaven exists and is ruled by the Father. It does NOT mean that we stumble blindly around, not knowing where to go. God has given us the directions, it is up to us to follow His road map.
Philippians 3:12-21
- Conversation – politeuma (Strong’s G4175): citizenship, community, commonwealth.
- Our true citizenship is not anywhere on earth—it is in heaven.
John 14:1-4 “(1) Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. (2) In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. (3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. (4) And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.”
