Patriotic To Heaven

Introduction: Scripture Reading- Philippians 3:17-21

- Definition of patriotism: love and devotion to one's country.

- Spiritual patriotism: Our true citizenship is in Heaven.

Discussion:

I. Understanding Our Heavenly Citizenship

A. First we have to be a citizen.

-Born citizens (Israelites; not more)

-Immigrants (Gentiles; us)

-You must denounce the former country and give allegiance to the new country (heaven). The Ten Commandments are no longer law but all except one were carried over to the new law and embedded and one of those was that God is a jealous God and thou shalt have no other Gods before me. When we become a Christian, we denounce everything from that former life to serve God, Christ, and righteousness.

B. **Philippians 3:20**

- Explanation of "conversation" meaning "citizenship."

- We belong to Heaven, not Earth.

C. **Colossians 3:1-2**

- "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth."

- Our focus and affections should be on heavenly things.

II. Characteristics of a Heavenly Patriot

A. **Loyalty to the King**

- **Matthew 6:25-34** - "33. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

B. Prioritizing God's kingdom above all.

- **Obedience to Heavenly Laws**

- **John 14:15** - "If ye love me, keep my commandments."

- Living by God's commandments as citizens live by their country’s laws.

C. **Ambassadors for Christ**

- **2 Corinthians 5:11-21** - "21. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God."

- Representing Heaven in our daily lives.

-God’s laws are in full effect here on the entirety of this earth just like the laws of any country are in full effect at that country’s embassy.

III. The Rewards of Heavenly Patriotism

A. **Eternal Inheritance**

- **1 Peter 1:1-4** - "4. To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you."

- The promise of an everlasting inheritance.

B. **Heavenly Home**

- **John 14:2-3** - "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."

- Jesus preparing a place for us in Heaven.

IV. Living as Citizens of Heaven on Earth

A. **Distinct Lifestyle**

- **Romans 12:2** - "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect (telios- complete), will of God."

- Living a life that reflects our heavenly citizenship.

B. **Hope and Assurance**

- **Hebrews 11:16** - "But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city."

C. -We too are pilgrims looking for a better country. We do not have dual citizenship. We are strangers in a strange land.

-**I Peter 2:1-12** [vs. 9 peculiar- purchased; vs. 12 conversation- behavior]

- Longing for our heavenly home with confidence and hope.
