The Church As The Bride
Introduction: Scripture Reading- Ephesians 5:22-27
- The Bible begins with a wedding in Eden and ends with a wedding in eternity. From Genesis to Revelation, God reveals His desire for intimate, covenantal relationship with His people. The church is not just a crowd of people—it is a bride. Not just invited to the wedding—we are a part of the wedding party, i.e. the important members, the bride and the groom.
- Illustration: Picture a bride on her wedding day—radiant, prepared, expectant. That’s how scripture calls us to live: not distracted, not disheveled, but devoted and dressed in righteousness.
- Let’s explore three dimensions of this divine romance: Christ’s love for His bride, the bride’s preparation, and our call to live in anticipation.
I. Christ’s Love for His Bride
- Ephesians 5:25 “Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.”
- Sacrificial love: Jesus didn’t just say “I love you”—He proved it on the cross. He proved it by sending the Comforter to the apostles to guide them into all truth and them leaving that truth for us to be guided.
- Illustration: Imagine a groom who sees his bride drowning in debt, disease, and despair—and chooses to take her place. That’s the cross.
- Sarah’s gym membership debt.
- Covenantal love: His love isn’t casual or conditional—it’s eternal and binding.
- John 3:16 “For God so loved the world…”
- Rom 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
- Jealous love: He desires our whole heart, not divided affection.
- Illustration: Hosea’s pursuit of Gomer shows God’s relentless love—even when we wander, He woos us back. (Hosea 3)
- Jealous Love
- God is jealous—not petty, but passionate.
- He desires our whole heart, not divided affection.
- Exodus 34:14 says, “The Lord… is a jealous God.”
- His jealousy protects us from spiritual adultery.
- Application Questions:
- What competes with Christ for your affection?
- Are you loving Him with your whole heart—or just part?
- If Christ loves us this deeply, how should we respond? Like any bride—we prepare for the marriage with our whole heart and devote our all to the groom.
II. The Bride’s Preparation
- Ephesians 5:26–27 [Read]
- “That he might sanctify and cleanse it… that it should be holy and without blemish.”
- Sanctification is bridal preparation. The Word washes us, the Spirit refines us.
- Sanctification isn’t optional—it’s bridal grooming.
- The Word washes us (John 17:17).
- The Spirit refines us (2 Corinthians 3:18).
- God is not just saving us—He’s beautifying us.
- Holiness is our wedding garment. Revelation 19:8 says the fine linen is “the righteousness of saints.”
- Holiness isn’t legalism—it’s love expressed in purity.
- We don’t wear our own righteousness—we wear His.
- As bride will take the grooms last name. We as the bride of Christ take His name, showing our love and devotion to Him and Him alone.
- The wedding garment is woven daily through obedience, repentance, and worship.
- Readiness is our responsibility. We don’t just wait—we prepare.
- Illustration: Esther spent a year preparing for her moment before the king. Est 2:12 “Now when every maid's turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women;)”
- Oils, perfumes, training.
- Likewise, we prepare daily for our moment with Christ.
- Readiness Is Our Responsibility
- We don’t just wait—we prepare.
- Matthew 25:1–13: The wise virgins kept oil in their lamps.
- Readiness means vigilance, not just sitting around and waiting.
- We prepare through prayer, purity, and pursuit.
- Application Questions:
- What does your spiritual wardrobe look like?
- Are you preparing daily—or procrastinating spiritually?
III. Living in Anticipation
- Revelation 19:7-9 [Read]
- We are betrothed, not yet married. The engagement is real, but the wedding is coming.
- We live in the “already but not yet.”
- Paul says we are “espoused to one husband” (2 Corinthians 11:2).
- Betrothal demands faithfulness.
- Illustration: In Jewish tradition, the bride didn’t know the exact hour the groom would arrive. She kept her lamp lit and her heart ready.
- We Live with Longing; Like the wise virgins in Matthew 25, we keep our lamps full.
- Longing is love expressed in waiting.
- Romans 8:23: We “groan inwardly” for redemption.
- True love waits—but it also watches.
- Our worship should reflect our yearning.
- Illustration: A soldier’s wife waits at the window, watching for headlights. That’s the posture of the Church.
- We Live with Urgency
- The Bridegroom comes “as a thief in the night.”
- We must be awake, alert, alive.
- The world lulls us to sleep—but the Word stirs us.
- Urgency doesn’t mean panic—it means purpose.
- Application Questions:
- Are we living like the wedding is near?
- What needs to change so we’re ready?
- So how do we live as the Bride? Let’s think practically.
IV. Application: How Do We Live as the Bride?
- Return to first love. Revelation 2:4 warns against losing our passion for Christ.
- Rekindle your devotion.
- Remember your first love or how you felt when you heard and obeyed the gospel.
- Pursue purity. Guard your heart, your eyes, your walk.
- Purity isn’t perfection—it’s direction.
- What you consume shapes your character.
- Stay in the Word. It’s the water that washes us.
- Read it. Meditate on it. Obey it.
- Let Scripture shape your bridal identity.
- Worship with longing. Let your praise reflect your anticipation.
- Worship is bridal rehearsal.
- Sing like you’re preparing for the aisle.
- Invite others to the wedding. Evangelism is bridal joy—“Come meet my Groom!”
- Share the gospel with urgency and delight.
- The invitation is open—don’t keep it to yourself.
- Ask yourself: Am I living like I’m engaged to Jesus? What needs to change so I’m ready?
Conclusion:
You are not just a member of the church—collectively we are the beloved of Christ. He has chosen us, pursued us, and prepared a place for us. The wedding is coming. The Groom is near. Let us be found faithful, radiant, and ready.

- Revelation 21:2 “And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”
